Nature of work

A sales representative usually performs many of the following tasks:
 
  • Visiting clients to demonstrate the use of products shows samples and takes orders.
  • Arranging a schedule of visits to major potential buyers by contacting people and making appointments.
  • Developing and updating knowledge of their own products and the products of their competitors.
  • Establishing customers' needs, explaining, and demonstrating products to them, which may involve providing technical descriptions of products and how they may be used.
  • Negotiating about prices and credit terms.
  • Preparing contracts and recording orders.
  • Reporting to employers on sales and providing feedback about the marketing of new products.
  • Carrying  out formal presentations of products using videos and other training aids, attendingpromotional markets and organizing product displays.
  • Working on marketing campaigns.
  • Planning and working towards meeting sales targets and budgets.
  • Participating in marketing events such astrade shows, and marketing events.
  • Following-up for collection of payment.
  • Coordinating shipping schedules and delivery of merchandise and services.
  • Providingon-the-job training to new sales employees.

Environment of work

  • Work requires significant local travel and may require occasional overnight travel and weekend and/or evening work.
  • Sales representative often visit markets and customers.
  • He/she works outside the company and with different groups for services at multiple levels, whichmakes the work environment varied.
  • Sales representativeis a full-timesalaried position. The sales representative works closely with the Sales Manager to develop, manage, direct and oversee selling activitiesand to develop and implement strategies and objectives to achieving the Marketing goals.
  • The hours they work depend on their current market. Some have flexible hours while others have nine to five, or overtime schedule.

Professional life

  • Promotion may involve movementfrom product line representative to another, which may include marketingsimple products or complex one's.
  • With experience, a sales representative is likely to be sales manager.
  • Progression within the industry will come with experience, and senior roles can be achieved depending on the number and size of contracts.
  • He/she may choose to shift his/her career from industrial company to work as sales representative in hotels, stores, and bank.
  • The salary depends on the industry, employer and experience (50000 S.P). Those hired full time, they may receive more benefits related to sales numbers.

Getting the job

Entry requirements are:
 
  • Bachelor degree in Marketing or Business Administration.
  • At least Professional Diploma in Business Administration and Marketing, or convenience scientific level for job but with training courses in sales skills, Marketing, or Business Administration.

  • Demonstrated ability for problem solving; ability to determine solutions for customers (consultative sales approach).
