Nature of work
Apopulation statistician designs questionnairesto conduct census andcollect data from communities. Every questionnaire reflects the ways and standers of conductingcensus in a communitysuch as, geographical distribution, ages, genders, and income. He/she handles and analyzes collected data aiming to describe and clarify the demographic reasons and results in a community such as, decreasing birth rates, fertility, and ageing. He/she applies mathematical and statistical tools and draws conclusions through accurate accounting aiming to verify hypothesis validity. A population statistician does the following tasks:- Planning the strategy of collecting, analyzing, and processing data.
- Applying the strategies of analyzing and processing data by using computer tools.
- Explaining the analysis conclusions and summarizing the facts for communities which are prepared to study.
- Applying and contributing in developing new technics and manners used in this career.
Environment of work
A population statistician can join the group of demographic survey in the central bureau of statistics. A population statistician usually knows the methodology of questionnaire, chooses the standers of classification population, and prepares classifying of society categories. He/she cooperates with other specialists in the fields of demography, economics, and geography, and in the fields of statistic, urban planning,and healthand others.After choosing the methodology of surveying, he/she examines it practically. Also, he/she supervises collecting data and collects the answers in a database. He/she manipulates collected data and formulates it in suitable forms, detailed charts, and demographic maps. He/she answers the queries of learners, specialist businessmen, consultants, and governmental employees.
Professional life
In public sector:A population statistician handles his/her job in the central bureau of statistics. Also, he/she can work in the fields of teaching and researching.
A population statistician rarely works in private sector, in the field of human resources in public sector or private studies bureaus.
Getting the job
There is no specific legislation to practice this career in Syria. However, practicing it in public sector needs a bachelor degree in economics (statistics, demography, or human and social sciences specializations). A population statistician in the central bureau of statistics should have a master degree or doctorate in statistics or demography.The faculty of economics in different Syrian universities grants a bachelor degree, master degree, and doctorate in statistics. The higher institute for demographic studies and researches grants a professional postgraduate master and diploma in demography.

A population statistician studies some aspects in a community, such as fertility, mortality, marital status, immigration, and residency. He/she usually works in bureaus and conducts fields’ studies. He/she works in private and public sectors, and ministries. Also, he/she especially works in the central bureau of statistics and researches centers.A population statistician should study for four years in the faculty of economics. Then he/she can gain a master degree in demography for being able to prepare questionnaires, collect and examine data, apply strategies of analyzing this data, and prepare reports. Later on, he/she can manage demographic survey projects and analyze demographic data.
