Nature of work

Insurance claims inspector is employed directly by insurance companies to investigate claims made by clients holding insurance policy (claimants). His role includes dealing with a claim, undertaking full responsibility and following it through to completion and settlement.

 Typical activities of Insurance claims inspector include:

  visiting scenes of accidents, such as workplaces, or loss (fire or theft);

  investigating the circumstances of an accident or loss and undertaking background research;

  checking details with policyholders and witnesses;

  providing advice on making a claim and the processes involved;

  contacting tradespeople from a network of approved professionals and arranging for them to make repairs on the policyholder's property;

  acquiring information from other professionals, such as the police and medical and technical staff;

  liaising externally with loss adjusters, lowers and other legal/claims professionals;

  liaising internally with senior claims inspectors, staff in the claims department, underwriters and other appropriate staff in the company;

  negotiating a settlement with claimants or legal representatives and arranging payments;

 

Environment of work

Insurance claims inspector typically and offecially works 5 days weekly with the possibility of having some extra occasional- unsocial hours. for example; he/she may attend an  interview with  police for information during their nightshift rota,further; sometimes,work might require visiting
claimants in their homes or place of work, with occasional office visits or meetings with lowers and other professionals, therefore ; calls to attend a visit can necessitate a quick response and unsocial hours.
While some of the larger insurance companies may provide and support career breaks, the opportunity to work part time is rare.
Women are currently under-represented in this profession, although the number of women in the role is increasing.
He/she should aware that the job involves working to tight deadlines, working under pressure and using technology.
Although travel within a working day to meet clients is frequent, absence from home overnight and travel are uncommon.

Getting the job

This area of work is open to all graduates, but if they have a wish to increase their chances, the following degree subjects are recommended for them :

  • law;
  • mathematics.
There are two entry routes into the profession:
Either through a general graduate management training scheme with the larger insurance companies; or directly into claims work after initial training. It is possible to follow the second route without a degree.
