Nature of work
He/she works independently to study and classify farm animals types and forms to arrange breeding, hybridization and develop programs to the high productivity new forms production through genetic studies, investigate morphological characters that are affected by genes, prepare operating Lab schedules, equipment and quantities. He/ she studies purchases conditions, prepares technical reports, manages for developing their skills, and develops the preparation of general and vocational healthy and safety requirements. The tasks include:- Studying and classifying types and forms of farm animals and poultry and their genetics and ways of inheriting these genetics.
- Investigating morphological characters that are affected by genes.
- Arranging breeding and hybridization programs.
- Developing the new forms production with high productivity.
- Preparing operating lab and equipment schedules.
- Preparing technical and quantitative schedules of operating equipment.
- Preparing technical and financial conditions of purchases.
- Preparing technical reports.
- Developing work procedures using modern technologies.
- Assessing subordinates to define needed training for developing their skills.
- Providing vocational healthy and safety requirements.
Environment of work
- Animal improvement engineer usually works about 8 hours a day even in weekends, but he/ she might sometimes need to work overtime during emergencies such as breeding and labor and for some lab work that needs extended time.
- He/ she will need to wear special work uniform.
- To accomplish work, he/ she needs using various equipment.
- He/ she works individually or as part of a team in private or public establishments for improving farm animals and poultry.
- Adheres to universal standards for farm animals and poultry improvement to ensure good performance
- Animal improvement engineer can work independently or as part of a team in private or public sector, mostly as a team manager
- He/she contributes to plan improvement of farm animals and poultry and prepare technical reports of activities
- He/she contributes to put descriptions of work production requirements
Professional life
- Starting salary in public sector will be at least 20000 Syrian pounds
- When practical and administrative experience are gained, work path will be developed from field executive engineer to more prominent posts within animal husbandry which involve planning and executing animal improvement programs.
- Vocational top graduates can proceed to obtain a university degree
- Animal improvement engineer may travel abroad for gaining more work and training or for providing expertise in animal improvement

- The students should take some foundation modules such as: rangeland, animal nutrition, reproduction & animal physiology, fodder manufacturing; some specialized modules in animal breeding for sheep, goats, cattle, horses and camels, animal ecology and health, and genetic improvement techniques, in addition to supportive knowledge in foreign languages, programming, and engineering quality
- Agriculture faculty graduate is preferably to carry on postgraduate studies for M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees at the department of animal production
