Nature of work

Telecommunication technician is a profession in the engineering field. It presents the joint between the academic supervisor who supervises the engineering project and the technician or craftsman who executes the task. He/She is responsible for understanding and analyzing the technical booklets supplied by manufacturer from operational, assembly or maintenance. This includes:​
  • Drawing and reading of engineering plans for the purpose of analyzing, testing, fixing and calibration.
  • Preparing the technical reports, managing the employees and developing their skills, and developing the procedures for occupational safety.
  • The tasks assigned to the Telecommunication Engineer can be classified as follows:
  • Preparing tender books for purchasing and maintenance of systems in the telecommunication field, which must include technical and financial details.
  • Preparation of technical reports related to the task and developing work methods using advanced technology.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety tools and ability to use them. To make available the healthy working conditions and developing the procedures for the occupational safety.

Environment of work

  • The Telecommunication Technician works for 8 hours daily throughout the week, except weekends and official holidays. He/She may have to work overtime even on holidays especially when there is installation or periodic or emergency maintenance works than requires long time.
  • Doesn’t need special uniform.
  • Require some measures and simple electrical tools to perform the tasks.
  • Can work alone by establishing his/her own workshop specialized in maintaining and fixing personal and home telecommunication appliances or joining some tenders for a complete works in the telecommunication field.
  • He/She should have a commitment to the international specification standards for telecommunication systems, installing the systems in the proper environment and works on assuring the performance quality.
  • He/She should have integrity and honesty and should not submit to any emotional effects and should give his/her opinion and record the results of his/her work honestly and neutrally.

Professional life

  • Can assist the telecommunication engineer performing the work whether in the public or private sectors. He/she is mostly the head of the execution team. The wage at the start when working for the public sector is about 17000 Syrian Pounds.
  • The professional course of the telecommunication technician develops by gaining administrative and practical experiences through employment progression as workshop chief then to the larger circles and departments in managing projects as an expert which includes planning tasks for the execution stages and defining the execution priorities.
  • For the top ranking graduates of the technical institutes, they can proceed to the faculty of the same profession.

  • They can travel to make some maintenance or to give a practical expertise for the installation of some systems.

Sectors of careers

The telecommunication technician can perform tasks within the following  professional sectors:​
  • Private sector, i.e. his/her own workshop.
  • Public and private sectors and all establishments that work in the telecommunication field (Radio, TV, Broadcasting stations, alarm and surveillance stations).
  • The telecommunication technician can continue higher education in telecommunication departments at public universities (available for 3% top ranking students).
  • Also can continue higher education in telecommunication departments at private universities according to the criteria set by them.

Getting the job

The profession can be achieved through admission to the Technical Institute for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering department of telecommunication after finishing the senior high school scientific section with a score suiting the requirement defined by the ministry of higher education, or after finishing vocational senior high school electron section also with a score suiting the requirement defined by the ministry of higher education.
The student at this department study the following knowledge fields: preparation field includes foreign language, computer science that helps in modern research and communication, other professional knowledge fields in electricity and electronics, professional computer programs related to electronic circuits, and a supportive knowledge fields includes metrology, quality engineering, industrial and occupational safety.

  • Knowledge of analog and digital electronics and signal treatment and some specific software.
  • Knowledge of wire and wireless telecommunication principles such as PBX and its networks and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of cameras and their maintenance.
  • Knowledge of broadcasting systems including understanding their plans and TV monitors.Knowledge of satellite telecommunication principles used in mobile phones and microwaves and optical fibers.
