Nature of work
The profession of electrical network Technician is a profession in the engineering field. It presents the joint between the academic supervisor who supervises the engineering project and the technician or craftsman who executes the task. The electrical network technician should be able to do the following tasks:- Understanding and interpreting the electrical plans and all technical terms related to the profession.
- Using computer and general electrical software.
- Studying all types of electrical loads and their specifications and contribute to improving capacity factor.
- Using the electrical measures and application of quality and industrial safety criteria.
- Preparing tender books for purchasing and maintenance of systems in the electrical networks field, which must include technical and financial details.
- Preparing technical reports related to the task and developing work methods using advanced technology.
- Providing the healthy working conditions.
- Applying the quality assurance and industrial safety procedures.
- Assisting in educational process by working as laboratory technician or assists the engineer in teaching subjects related to the profession.
Environment of work
- The electrical network technician works for 8 hours daily except weekends and official holidays. He/she may have to work overtime even on holidays especially when there is installation, periodic or emergency maintenance works that requires long time.
- He/she may need special uniform or uniform accessories which are electrically isolated such as rubber gloves or shoes.
- He/she needs measures and electrical tools to perform the tasks.
- He/she should have a commitment to the international specification standards for electrical networks.
- He/she installs the systems in the proper environment and works on assuring the performance quality.
- He/she may have to work sometimes in open places.
Professional life
- The electrical network technician can perform the work whether in the public or private sectors. The salary when working for the public sector is starts by 20000 Syrian Pounds.
- The professional course of the electrical network technician develops by gaining administrative and practical experiences through employment progression as workshop chief then to the larger circles and departments in managing projects as an expert which includes planning tasks for the implementation stages and defining the implementation priorities.
- He/she can travel to make some maintenance or to give a practical experience about the installation of some systems.
Sectors of careers
The Electrical Network Technician can perform tasks within the following professional sectors:- Private sector, i.e. his/her own workshop specialized in maintenance of domestic and industrial electrical networks or by joining tenders for turnkey works in the field of electrical networks.
- Public and private sectors in all industrial and service establishments that deals with electrical machines and networks.
- The Electrical Network Technician can continue higher education in electrical departments at public universities (available for 3% top ranking students).
- Also can continue higher education in electrical departments at private universities according to the criteria set by them.
Getting the job
The profession can be achieved through admission to the Technical Institute for Mechanic and Electricity department of electrical networks after finishing the high school scientific section with a suitable score .or after finishing vocational senior high school electrical section also with a score suiting the requirement defined by the ministry of higher education.The student at this department study the following knowledge fields: preparation field includes foreign language, computer science that helps in modern research and communication, other professional knowledge fields in electricity and electronics, professional computer programs related to electrical circuits and machines, and a supportive knowledge fields includes metrology, quality engineering, industrial and occupational safety.

- Ability to implement electrical networks for low voltage and testing them.
- Ability to implement electrical networks for industrial facilities and their maintenance.
- Ability to assembly and implement of electrical boards and automatic driving and their maintenance.
- Ability to implement lighting circuits for streets, parks and domestic and industrial facilities.
- Connection of emergency electrical generation units, their maintenance and calibration.
- Ability to implement transformation station systems and their maintenance (transformers, switches, isolators, …)
- Execution of earthing, fire, burgling protection, and lightening circuits.Ability to implement PLC systems
