Nature of work
The profession of Structural Engineer– steel structures is one of the construction industry professions. The engineer may work individually as a steel structure consultant, or as a member of a design team. He/she may also supervise steel structure construction on sites.Profession field
- Designs the steel structure to resist gravity, wind and earthquake loading so that these loads are transferred safely to soil according to approved design standards
- Coordinates with other design members to prepare design drawings/shop drawings free from errors and contradictions
- Answers the contractors requests the design elements.
- Supervises construction of steel structures to ensures required safety and quality.
- Conforms the compatibility of specification of submitted material/systems with the project specifications
- Prepares progress reports.
Managerial field
- Prepares the contract conditions of steel construction and other technical and financial documents.
- Prepares technical reports related to steel structures and adopts recent technology work methods.
- Evaluates the employee performance, estimates their training and continuous knowledge needs.
- Be responsible for applying health and safety procedures on site.
Environment of work
- The Structural Engineer – steel structures works 7-8 hours in the working days, he/she may work during weekends according to work conditions. He/she may work overtime when needed
- Usually, the engineer may wear casual or formal dress in office activities. While on site, he/she should wear safety shoes, comfortable dress e.g. jeans and protective glasses.
- Work equipment: For office activities, the engineer should have a desktop or laptop computer with the availability of engineering software and key reference books. He/she may work as a self-employed by establishing his own firm for steel structure fabrication and erection. He/she may also works as an employee within an engineering office, construction/fabrication company
- He/she should satisfy the local and international standards related to steel structures to obtain safe, durable and quality construction.
- The Structural Engineer – steel structures may practice his/her profession within a team in private or public sectors. He/she is generally the leader of the labor group in the field of fabrication and erection. In the field of design, he/she is generally a member of a team lead by a senior civil, mechanical or architectural engineer who has extensive experience in projects similar to the project under design
Professional life
- In case of contracting companies, the steel structure engineer can promote from a site engineer to a construction manager to finally a project manager, provided that, he sustained the required managerial and engineering experience. In case of his/her work in a design office, he/she can promote from a draftsman/investigator to a designer/supervisor engineer to finally a project manager of the design teamprovided that he/she sustained the required managerial and engineering experience.
- He/she may travel abroad to undertake training courses, visit manufacturing companies, procures materials
- His/her monthly salary in public sectors starts from 20000 Syrian Pounds.

Getting the job
- Gains Bachelor Degree BSc of Civil Engineering or MSc. in Structural Engineering
- Excellent knowledge in Structural Analysis, Steel Structure Design, Design of Structures to Resist Earthquake, Computer-Aided Design, Engineering Foundation, Construction Management
- Be familiar with national and international design standards
- Be a member of the Order of Engineers or similar establishments
- Expert use of AutoCAD (2D), Structural engineering programs (e.g. STAAD Pro, PROKON, Robot)
- Attends professional courses, e.g. (Engineering Supervision, Project Management, Value Engineering, Steel structure design according to a specific code)
- Attains professional certificates e.g. CVS (Value Engineering Specialist), PMP (Project Management Practitioner)
- Has experience in the field of design, manufacturing and supervision of steel structures through previous work in companies related to public and private sectors
- Should have essential knowledge in the subjects of (Steel Structures, Mechanics of Structures, Computer-Aided Design, Engineering Foundation, Construction Management and Engineering Design and Drafting)
